Curtis Glendell Mathews, Pastor of One of the Oldest Southern Black Churches, Arrested on Sex Crimes
Pastor Curtis Glendell Mathews, leader of Springfield Baptist Church in Dinwiddie County, Va., was arrested late Tuesday night on charges of using a communication device to facilitate sex with a minor, Petersburg police said. Curtis Glendell Mathews is the pastor for one of the oldest black churches in the South.
Pastor Mathews was charged with two counts of using a communication device to facilitate sex with a minor. According to media reports, a guardian of the unidentified teen notified police and authorities initiated an investigation. Curtis Glendell Mathews is being held without bond at the Riverside Regional Jail.
Curtis Glendell Mathews, 50, who has been pastor of Springfield Baptist Church in Dinwiddie County for about 15 years, was arrested about 11:45 p.m. at his home in the 7700 block of Rolling Hill Road in Hopewell, Petersburg police spokeswoman Esther Hyatt said in a release.
Mathews was charged with two felony counts of using a communication device to facilitate sex with a minor. Authorities began their investigation after a guardian of the unidentified teen notified police, Hyatt said.
Mathews stated in court papers that he is unemployed and collecting $378 in monthly unemployment benefits, but a church official said that pertains to a second job he held separate from his position as pastor. Source: Richmond Times Dispatch
Seems that we may have another snake in the pulpit. We will wait until the case is litigated before passing judgment, since an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but I am tired of hearing about these rogue pastors and their inner circles turning a blind eye to their misdeeds.
